The grand trailer of Crimson Desert, one of the most notable games at gamescom

Almost the brightest episode of last night’s Opening Night Live was the showcase of Crimson Desert – a terribly ambitious game from Korean studio Pearl Abyss. The latter released the MMO Black Desert, but in this case we’re dealing with a traditional single-player adventure.

What’s the game about?

Crimson Desert is set on the fantasy continent of Pivel. The country of Akapen, without a king, is in the midst of a power struggle. Fearing for his life, a young prince finds refuge in the remote region of Quaiden. The protagonist named Cliff, a mercenary commander known as the Gray Grieves, is the heir apparent.

While escorting the heir, the protagonist and his coworkers fall into a trap set by the Black Bears, Cliff’s sworn enemies. Protagonist is left alone and realizes that caught in a web of lies. Cliff sets off on a journey to take revenge on his offenders and find out if his comrades are alive.

The authors promise:

  • A revolutionary combat system.
  • A well-designed open world where life boils.
  • A bunch of activities, including hunting, cooking, gathering, fishing, taming horses and more.
  • Lots of ways to move around the map, from walking and climbing to horseback riding and flying.
  • Beautiful landscapes, for which the BlackSpace engine – an internal development of Pearl Abyss – is responsible.

So it’s not an MMO?

If you thought that Crimson Desert was an online game like Black Desert, your memory doesn’t fail you: at a certain point, the developers simply changed course. Let’s recap the chronology of events:

  • The project was announced back in November 2019. At that time, it was really about an MMO. Pearl Abyss claimed that the production of the game began in 2018.
  • In 2020, a video premiered, in which “Red Desert” already looked like a story-based action-RPG without a focus on the network mode.
  • In 2021, the Koreans made it clear: Crimson Desert is not an MMO.

The game will visit PC and unnamed consoles. No release date has been announced yet.
